29.1 million- New population of Nepal 2078, Central Bureau reports


 Central Bureau of Statistics, on Wednesday unveiled the preliminary data of the population  census which was conducted late last year starting from November. The data was unveiled via zoom meeting due to the on going situation regarding the covid-19 protocols.

The new population of Nepal is 29,192,480 in 2078 BS, as per the preliminary data. The report unveiled on Wednesday shows that the population of Nepal grew by 0.93 percent annually since 2011.

The population of Nepal is less than the expected 3 million with the growth rate being lower than the average. With 0.93 growth rate as per the preliminary report, Nepal's population growth rate since 2011 is lower than the average global growth rate which is 1.01 percent. 

The number of Nepalese living in abroad has increased since the last census and this might be one of the reason for low growth rate, according to the concerned authorities.

As per the report, Kathmandu is the most populated district of Nepal with a population of 2,017,532 and Manang being the least populated with over 5000 people. Furthermore, the populated municipalities of Nepal after Kathmandu are Pokhara, Bharatpur, Lalitpur and Birgunj respectively.

The population density of Nepal is 198 people per Sq KM and Terai region(53.66%) is the most populated  than the other two. Female population (51.04%) is around 6 lakh more than that of male population (48.96%). 

Nepal conducts population census every ten years and the country's total population increased by 2,697,976 since 2011 - which is the last census. The last conducted census was in 2068 BS which was 26,494,504 and before that the total population conducted in 2058 BS was 23,151,423.

The final report of the population census 2078 might come in next few months. We can expect more detail data and information about the population of Nepal in the final report which will probably be out in next 6-7 months.
