Kukur Tihar (2021)| Day when the dogs are worshiped

Nepal is the only country where the dogs are worshiped during the time of Tihar- the second biggest festival of Nepal. Kukur Tihar is the second day of  Dipawali which is solely dedicated for the dogs. The festival begins with Kaag and Kukur tihar.

Kukur Pooja is a day of dogs and it falls on one of the liveliest and most fun festival of Nepal – Dipawali  which is the festival of lights. With deusi, vailo and lights, the festival takes a while new mood.

Why is kukur Tihar celebrated ?

Dogs have always been a friendly and loyal animal to humans. For their loyalty, they does deserve to be celebrated once in a while. Besides, there is a saying that dogs were the messenger of Yama  and also and incarnation of Bhairava , so for their loyalty and companionship, they are worshiped.  There might also be other reasons behind this celebration.

Leaving a side for the reason that they are worshiped, during this day both house dogs, stray all are worshiped. They are greeted with a flower garland and a small tika on their forehead. They are treated with different foods that they like.

While it seems only the house owned dogs are worshiped but many friendly stray dogs are also equally treated throughout the country. Along with that, police dogs are not left behind as well. They are also treated with all the respect and celebration that they deserve.

There is not much a lot other than treating them with their favourite food and snacks after worshiping them. However, this celebration day is followed by three other auspicious important days of Dipawali. This is a time of celebration and festival of lights, so the whole five days provides you with festival vibes.

Beside that, Bhai tika, Laxmi Pooja and Govardhan Pooja/ Mha Pooja are the three major celebrations and auspicious days of Tihar.
