Agriculture is an adventure in itself. Why isn’t Agri tourism as popular?

There was a time when agriculture was a part of almost every one’s life. Most of the people were farmers back then and that is what life used to be before- a simple and a happy one. Now with this growing technology, things have vastly changed in this modern world. The world has seen a huge reduction of farmers in the field of agriculture as people have turned into other activities for the source of their income. Along with that, many fertile and agricultural land has been turned into the city areas.

Moving on to the agricultural sector in Nepal, it used to be one of the major occupation and day to day activities of Nepalese in the past. Not just that, Nepal has a huge potential in the field of agriculture but this world of technology has failed to understand that.

The capital of Nepal- Kathmandu, which is filled with houses and tall buildings used to be one of the agricultural area of the natives (Newars) of this place. Almost everyone owned a couple of agricultural lands nearby their houses at the capital. While most of these land have been filled with houses and urban civilization, there are still certain portion of the natives who owns a couple of their agricultural land where they plant and cultivate crops and vegetables for their families.

Apart from that, there are many people who are involved in agricultural for commercial purpose.  Many of them rent a piece of land and they plant and cultivate crops and vegetables which they use for commercial purpose and the number of people involved in this business are growing.

While it seems that agriculture is long gone in this modern world, people are slowly realizing the importance of agriculture.

Agriculture is an adventure in itself.

Well, agriculture actually is an adventure in itself, there is a hard work and there is a prize like any other adventure. I have been working in the field around my house planting crops, vegetables and what not for a while now and trust me, when all the sweat is dripped off after you complete your work, you will not just get a beautiful feeling but proudness as well.

The first thing that you should know is that it you get to explore varieties of crops and vegetables and there is a season to every crops. You can get to explore with the whole process and how things work in an agricultural field. While all of the planting and cultivating process seems similar, there is always a difference between them. You will need to use different equipment to plant different crops. While the modern technology has been introduced in the agricultural field but traditional equipment are still used by the most.

Apart from that, it is not just about planting crops and vegetables, there is also a process to create seedlings from the vegetables to create seed for the next process. At times, people wait for rain to plant a certain crops and at times they wait for sun to shine. You need to create a balance between all of it. The most satisfying part about this cultivation is that the homemade vegetables are always healthier than the ones that you get in the shop.

The next step to this is, grab your bag and explore the agricultural part of our lives. It is more fun and adventurous than it seems. Well, many tourists are already interested in agritourism and this sector has collected a handful of impression already from the tourists traveling to Nepal from different parts of the world. It seems people are now interested to know how the food they get on their tables are cultivated and produced.

Apart from all of it, agricultural activities also hold some culture along with it. During the specific season like planting wheat and likewise, whole family goes to their field along with their cultural cuisines for the lunch and spend the whole day doing the work in the field. The perfect example would be the time during ‘Asadh’.

So with just a little touristic point of view, why cannot we build agri-tourism to a top level? For a country like Nepal where agricultural is one of the major occupation and a huge part of almost every Nepalese, Agri tourism should get more attention. Apart from that, the capital, where agricultural activities are slowly declining, agri-tourism just might help to keep the agriculture enact in Kathmandu.
