The increasing number of Covid-19 cases and trekking to resume soon, is it safe to travel Nepal?

The daily new Covid-19 cases in Nepal (10 October) crossed the mark of 5000 ( all time highest) which now makes a total of 30000 plus active cases in Nepal as of now. A couple of weeks back, there used to be 1000 to 2000 daily new cases now it can be clearly seen that the Covid-19 situation is not getting any better with increasing number in daily new cases of the virus.

The Covid-19 status in Nepal

Nepal is making all necessary preparations to resume the trekking and mountain activities from 17 October which is less than a week from now. There has been no any further news update regarding the rumours of lockdown from the side of Nepal government despite the increasing number of Covid-19 cases. In fact, Government seems to be working on the effective measures to control the covid-19 situation in Nepal which does not seem to be quite effective looking at the present scenario but we can definitely hope for the best in coming days.

Now with foreigners to be permitted to Nepal soon, the tourism industry of Nepal is getting ready and taking all the necessary precautions and safety measures to safely conduct the tourism activities but the increasing number of Covid-19 cases tells otherwise.

Kathmandu with high number of Covid-19 cases, is it possible to avoid capital ?

Kathmandu, the capital has been recording the highest number of Covid-19 cases for a while now and anyone traveling to Nepal can not skip the capital as the Tribhuwan International Airport is the only International airport of Nepal. However, if you still plan on traveling to Nepal then make sure you avoid several activities in Kathmandu and have minimal physical contact. As per the protocol of Nepal government, anyone traveling to Nepal have to stay in a 7 days hotel quarantine facility, after seven days you can head on straight to your trekking destination via domestic flights or with the help of your travel agent. This way you might skip away from capital to your travel destination during your trip to Nepal. Anyway the environment looks quite normal than before despite the increasing number of Covid-19 cases with the resumption of different organisations and different services and facilities.

Know your safe way out from Kathmandu to your trekking destination.

With the present scenario of the Covid-19  situation, it seems quite a risk to plan a trip to Nepal as of now. While many people are already ready for their trip to Nepal, many are still concerned about the Corona virus and the safety of their travel.

The positive side of the tourism story.

Domestic tourism running smoothly in Nepal

However the other side of the story has a good news. The tourism industry of Nepal has made domestic tourism as their number one priority due to the travel ban for international tourists and while talking about the domestic tourism, it is running smoothly in Nepal. From small trios to long tour, domestic tourism is shaping greatly throughout the country. There are still some restrictions and with limited services at few places due to Covid-19 concerns. The travel industry as a whole have made strict about following health and safety guidelines as mentioned by the Nepal Government. Bike riding and hiking seems to be one of the popular activities as of now among the domestic tourists. Looking at the way domestic tourism is heading, it seems that there is a chance to complete the trip safely.

Successful trekking expedition amid pandemic

On the other hand, the couple of successful trekking expedition in this pandemic period has created a hope for tourists, travel agents and tourism industry as a whole that trekking can be safely carried out during this Covid-19 situation. Clanwander- the first group who successfully completed their EBC trek during pandemic and with lockdown on hand with very limited services while the Prince of Bahrain with his team has recently completed their expedition of Mt. Lobuche and is already heading for their next expedition at Mt. Manaslu. These couple of successful expedition has already been a great motivation and has created a hopeful environment for trekking and mountain activities.

Nepal government intends on resuming trekking and mountain activities not all.

Not to forget, Nepal government is resuming tourism in Nepal only for trekking and mountaineering activities as of now. The main purpose of tourism will be trekking and mountaineering, so many other tourist activities might nit be available for the visitors this time due to Covid-19 concerns. As I have already mentioned, Mountains on the other hand seems to be one of the safest places to conduct tourist activities during this pandemic due to Covid-19 concerns. Some of the mountainous regions are still Covid-19 free and has few or no Covid-19 cases at all. The trekking activities will no doubt be operated on the safe zones. Nepal Government might be working on to provide a safe environment for tourist who will be traveling to Nepal for trekking.

However, the decision is all yours, make your mind and prepare yourselves before you travel to Nepal. It is only few more weeks from now for trekking to officially resume in Nepal. Is
